Andreu World, an international contemporary furniture company, opens its first showroom in the United Arab Emirates at Dubai Design District (d3) tonight. Designed by renowned Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, this new space will serve as a gathering point for the brand's customers, professionals, and visitors to the city. As part of the Circular Design® Challenge, a discussion featuring leading voices such as Darren Taylor (INC), Diane Thorsen (Gensler), and Lindsay Campbell (M_39) will be held in the showroom on November 7th, fostering conversations on sustainability and innovative design.
The showroom’s opening coincides with Dubai Design Week, the region’s largest creative festival running in strategic partnership with d3 until 10 November. The sustainability-centric design brand has an extensive global footprint, with 32 showrooms in 26 cities across North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and South and East Asia. Its arrival in Dubai aims to leverage the emirate’s vibrant arts and design scene and tap into a diverse and growing consumer market representing UAE residents and a regional and international traveller base.
“The Middle East is a powerful emerging market for the interiors and design space, as people begin to invest in lasting, sustainable products and furnishings,” said Jesús Llinares; CEO of Andreu World. “We are seeing promising demand that makes opening a permanent base in Dubai a natural next step in our company’s long-term growth strategy. Through Dubai Design District, we get to lay our foundations in a recognised creative hub frequented by design connoisseurs locally, regionally and globally while surrounded by an international community of our peers who are advancing the creative agenda. It’s an exciting step for our business to better cater to our regional customers by meeting them closer to home.”
“There is significant demand for sustainable living among UAE and Middle Eastern consumers,” said Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District (d3) – part of TECOM Group. “Brands like Andreu World cater to the mounting appetite for environmentally friendly brands, interiors and lifestyle products, allowing people to live their values without compromising aesthetics and functionality. We welcome a renowned international brand to join our global creative community and capture this market while adding incredible value to the rich dialogue around sustainability and design occurring within our community and Dubai’s broader creative ecosystem as we shape the future of design thinking.”
The showroom’s official opening will take place in the presence of the Spanish Ambassador of Spain to the United Arab Emirates, Iñigo de Palacio. The showroom will be open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM during Dubai Design Week, inviting visitors to explore the brand’s collections and inspiring space.
Andreu World will also mark its arrival in Dubai by participating in the inaugural edition of Design Next. Launched by d3 and Isola Design Group, this first-of-its-kind exhibition on the circular economy in the UAE will present sustainable design products and concepts by local, regional, and international designers and studios from November 5 to 10.
The Most Sustainable Showroom The interior design was created by the renowned designer Patricia Urquiola. Continuing the narrative that started with the Milan, Tokyo and London showrooms, she extends a design journey for the Andreu World showroom in Dubai. Embracing the heritage, identity, and mission of Andreu World, her goal is to create a space that authentically embodies the brand's essence.
"We aimed to create a space that reflects the essence of Andreu World, its heritage, identity, and mission,” Urquiola said. “To achieve this, we worked with renewable resources and sustainable materials to create a space where visitors can enjoy a playful and exploratory experience while flowing through the space, discovering different areas defined by translucent panels. The space is designed to be holistic and multifunctional, catering to the diverse needs and uses of Andreu World's designs."
The Dubai showroom maintains continuity with Andreu World's image by using the same tones and materials found in the previous spaces, particularly wood, which is the brand's signature material. The showroom’s layout occupies 200 square meters over one floor, with a coherent design language throughout the space. The interiors are reinterpreted with a focus on enhancing the depth of the space to maintain a complete view of the entire showroom.
Patricia Urquiola envisions a flexible and adaptable space with a single long open area on the ground floor that welcomes visitors with screen walls dividing various contemporary living spaces and showcasing Andreu World's collections. Additionally, there are chair racks made of Smile Plastic that display Andreu World's most iconic chairs, visible from the shopfront, offering a glimpse into the brand's heritage and range.
In line with Andreu World's commitment to sustainability, Urquiola incorporates renewable resources and sustainable materials throughout the space. A meticulous focus on the use of materials was central to the project. Smile Plastic, made from "waste" plastics collected from post-consumer and post-industrial sources, is used for the shelving.
The flooring is made of compact stone, chosen for its ability to minimise CO2 emissions and pollutants through simple drying, the use of recycled water, the exclusive use of reclaimed materials, the reuse of waste products, and zero waste. Moreover, the stone is laid dry, allowing it to be dismantled and reused. The result is a space that reflects the brand's values and serves as a testament to its dedication to environmental stewardship.
The showroom features Andreu World's latest collections, designed by Philippe Starck, Alfredo Häberli, Benjamin Hubert, Jasper Morrison, Piergorgio Cazzaniga and Patricia Urquiola herself.
